We list clinics that say they take emergencies around the clock, from their own websites or a dated listing. Some run an on-call line rather than a night shift. Petzuno isn't connected to any of them. Know a 24-hour vet we've missed? Tell us.

Is it an emergency?

Tick anything you're seeing. If you're not sure, call a vet: they'll tell you whether to come in.

First aid on the way

What to do in the first few minutes. It doesn't replace a vet.

πŸ₯΅ Heatstroke: cool first, then go

  1. Move your pet into shade or air conditioning straight away.
  2. Pour cool water over them (any water cooler than they are), and keep air moving with a fan or the car's air conditioning. A young, healthy dog can be put in cool water.
  3. Don't just drape a wet towel over them: it can trap the heat.
  4. Then drive to the vet, with the air conditioning on and cooling as you go. Call ahead so they're ready.

☠️ Poisoning

  1. Call a vet straight away, even if your pet seems fine: some poisons take hours to show.
  2. Don't try to make your pet sick unless a vet tells you to.
  3. Take the packet, the plant or a photo with you, and note roughly how much was eaten and when.
  4. Common culprits: chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, xylitol (in sugar-free gum and some peanut butters), macadamia nuts, alcohol, human painkillers, rat bait and insecticides.

🩹 Bites, wounds and bleeding

  1. Press a clean cloth firmly on a bleeding wound and keep pressing.
  2. If a snake or scorpion is involved, keep your pet as still and calm as you can and carry them if possible. Don't cut, suck or put ice on the bite. A photo of the snake from a safe distance helps the vet.
  3. Puncture wounds from another animal can look small but run deep: get them checked.

πŸš‘ Moving an injured pet

  1. Even the gentlest pet may bite when they're hurt or scared. Approach slowly and talk calmly.
  2. Slide a large dog onto a blanket or towel and carry it like a stretcher, keeping the back straight.
  3. Put a cat or small pet in a carrier or a box with air holes, with a towel over it to keep them calm.
