For years, Dubai dog owners had nowhere official to take their dogs for a swim. That changed when Dubai Islands Beach, off Deira, opened a beach and park for dogs. It's still the only official public dog beach in the city.

Where it is

The dog beach is at Dubai Islands, the islands off the Deira coast in the north of the city. Search for "Dubai Islands Beach" in your maps app.

What's there

When it opened, the beach got a fenced dog park of about 460 m² with a ramp, an agility seesaw and slalom posts, plus a pet shower, a drinking fountain, and waste bins with bag dispensers. The beach itself has showers, toilets, changing rooms and lifeguards. (Gulf News; Time Out Dubai)

The rules

  • Arrive on a leash. Dogs are leashed on arrival and in the shared areas.
  • Off-leash swimming is allowed under supervision in the designated area, so stay close and keep your dog in sight.
  • Bring vaccination records. Proof of vaccination is recommended.
  • Pick up after your dog, every time. Dirtying public areas can be fined.

Opening times

When it opened, the beach was reported to be open from sunrise to sunset; some recent guides list it as open around the clock. Check the latest before you go. Either way, from May to October go at sunrise or after sunset: sand gets hot enough to burn paws. Check whether it's safe to walk right now before you set off.

What to bring

  • A leash and harness.
  • Your dog's vaccination record (a photo on your phone works).
  • Plenty of fresh water and a bowl. Dogs that drink seawater can get sick.
  • Waste bags.
  • A towel, and a long line if your dog's recall isn't perfect yet.
  • Shade, if you're staying a while.

First time in the sea?

Not every dog is a natural swimmer. Let your dog paddle in the shallows first, keep sessions short, and rinse the salt off afterwards (the pet shower helps). Flat-faced breeds tire quickly in water, so consider a dog life jacket.

What about other Dubai beaches?

Dubai's public beaches, including Kite Beach, JBR and La Mer, don't allow dogs. Palm West Beach lets leashed dogs join you at most of its restaurants, but dogs can't swim there. See more dog-friendly spots in our pet-friendly Dubai guide.
